Subscribable Chapters - Details on How it works

Selling content with copy protection - Subscribable Chapters

Brief Overview

If you are an educator who owns content in some digital format, it is likely of value and if you wish you can sell that online without worrying that it will be infinitely copied without being paid for. RecallPlus subscribable chapter format allows only the user who purchased your content to use it on his/her computer(s).

Jan/Feb 2005 we are happy to offer you FREE conversion of your format into RecallPlus Chapter format.

From your point of view you simply need to send us the Chapter and name a reasonable price for that content. Remember that it should be reasonable/good value for money for the buyer. We will not promote it on your behalf if it is not.

Users download a 'Subscribable' form of your Chapter, which allows them a preview only of it, and then, assuming they want to use it for study, they may purchase. Most of sale price goes to content owner.

The Chapter, once subscribed to, can be copied to that user's other computers, but if it is given to a third party, will not open on their computer. Copyright is protected by the software itself, rather than wishful thinking that the law might intervene.

Even though the content may be distributed from the RecallPlus website or at least paid for there, it continues to be owned entirely by the educator/institution that produced it.

Pricing will typically be set by the Author. Typical split of revenue would be 50% to the Author.
Content will ultimately be versioned and rated by users and by RecallPlus Team.

EvolutionCode reserves the right to refuse or remove content from the online collection at any time. Typical reasons for this would be pricing that is unreasonable for given content comparatively relative to others or content that is dangerous, grossly incorrect or misleading by general community standards.

Options:
Options you may alter include
Subscription Period
Drag Drop allowable
Copy Paste allowable.

Default Settings for Options:
By default, your users will be able to Copy and Paste elements within Chapters they have subscribed to, but will not be able to Drag Drop entire cards.
This is to prevent easy copying of data from a subscribed chapter to a standard chapter.
If the Author wishes for tighter controls on Copying and Pasting, then these can also be optionally blocked.
By default users have the right to freely activate later releases of your Chapter for a period of 12 months. If you wish to change this from default this is possible also.

Quality and Rating of Chapters

Chapters will mostly attract a review by the RecallPlus team to give the users an indication of their merits.
It is envisaged that a user rating system will also be automated.

Remembering that a complete set of notes is not necessarily what users are looking for, outlines of material are will be accept for sale via the website. Users will likely purchase outlines predominantly so that they can then 'individualise' them as much as possible.
It must be clear when the user reviews the subscribable chapter the extent of the outline.

Users Perspective

Users hear that there is some content for them online, and find it in the online library.

They download a 'Subscribable' form of your Chapter, which allows them a preview only of it. Specifically they can view the first ideas on the cards in that Chapter... anything without a link TO it AND the first idea on the cards.
From this they will have a fair idea of what to expect when they purchase.

If they wish to use it for study, they may purchase.

The Transaction

Each time a subscribable chapter is opened, the user is asked if they would like to purchase it. If they have opened a number of chapters, then they are asked about each in turn.

If once all the chapters are opened, the user has agreed to purchase one or more, then the server is contacted for the price of the subscription.

If the user agrees to pay that price, they are then asked to confirm payment from any credit they may have or asked to jump online or pay with a credit key they have previously purchased.

Once the payment is made and upgrade confirmed by the user, the Chapter type changes from 'Subscribable' to 'Subscribed'. The program stores with the chapter, the date of activation of that chapter, and the period of time during which any further content version upgrades are freely available to that user for that Chapter.

Updates to the Subscribed Chapter

For typically a year after purchase, the user is allowed to upgrade for free to any newer Chapter version releases. This is achieved by opening the chapter they have already activated, and simultaneously opening the new edition of the same chapter, which will then be activated.
Names of chapters will also include the month and year of the update.

Use of Subscribed Chapters

Once a user has subscribed to a chapter, they can use it to test themselves. They can also edit it. There are varied restrictions on Dragging and Dropping Cards in the Knowledge Tree (which are determined by the Author). There are varied restrictions on Copy and Paste functionality (again determined by the Author).
Users can determine the restrictions an Author has placed on the use of a Chapter prior to subscribing by choosing
'File->Chapter Properties'.

Once a user has subscribed to a chapter, like RecallPlus itself, he/she will find that it is usable on all of her/his computers indefinitely.
The Author however is afforded copyright protection, as users will find if they try to hand out copies of the activated chapters to other users, you will find they will not be able to view them.

Obviously we would like to encourage the Authors to produce good content for you and that is only possible if you give them something in return :-)

Technical aspects of Copy Protection - How it works

The actual differences between the Chapter types are predominantly determined by the way they are encrypted.
Subscribable chapters are encrypted in a standard way that all copies of RecallPlus can open.
Subscribed chapters are encrypted using the user's computer's personal password.

When one user has purchased RecallPlus, they will likely have it on several computers. All these computers have the same password, but this is unique to that user.

Therefore the chapters that the user has subscribed to will open on all of the computers that he has a copy of RecallPlus on, but if he gives it to a friend, that friend, who has not paid for a copy of the chapter, and has a different password on his computer, will not be able to decrypt it.
This affords protection for the Author beyond what is available in other media.
Authors are expected in return for this protection to supply pricing that reflects that protection.

RelationShip to EvolutionCode and the RecallPlus Team

The content that is passed from Author to Users continues to be understood to be entirely copyright possessed by Author despite the fact that that content may be distributed from the RecallPlus website. The Author therefore may at anytime withdraw that content.

Conversely if the RecallPlus team may withdraw the content that an Author provides at the website and discontinue providing online transaction facilities for that product, if it is not felt to be reasonable.
Situations where that may occur include:
Apparently dangerous or problematic inaccuracies in content sold,
Clearly inappropriate pricing for the product (overpricing) which is not corrected,
Content which by societal standards is not felt to be acceptable for other reasons.
